The stakes of the nuclear industry

In the Belfort speech (2022), President Emmanuel Macron outlined the main directions for reviving the French nuclear industry. These guidelines have been confirmed and supplemented by successive Nuclear Policy Councils (CPN). They include:

  • The extension of the old nuclear fleet to 60 years and beyond;
  • The implementation of the EPR2 program, which provides for the construction of 3 new pairs of reactors due to start in 2038, and an optional 8 additional reactors;
  •  Support for the development of small modular reactors (SMR/AMR), notably within the framework of the France 2030 plan.

The fifth CPN in March 2025 also introduced the objective of closing the fuel cycle, through the development of generation 4 reactors (GenIV).
